10 Tips For The Best Bridal Makeup/Hair Trial

You’re engaged and soon to be married, how exciting is that?! There’s so many things to consider when having your wedding planned and one of the most important ones is to have a beauty team that you completely trust and feel comfortable with. All you naturally want is to look your best self and feel beautiful and confident on such an important day.

There’s a lot of questions popping in your mind because it might even be your first time having your makeup and hair done for an important event.

Here are the 10 ways to make sure you’ll get the best makeup trial you can:

1.   Look For Artists That Have Similar Work To The Look You Are Going For.

You’re the only person who knows what look you want to get and it will be smart to look for an artist whose work is similar to the look that you want to go for. Sometimes people specialize in natural looks, others prefer everyday glam and there’s people who like heavy glam for such important events so my advice would be to go with an artist whose work resonates with your vision the most.

2.   Try To Find A Local Artist

Please do try to find a local artist and definitely discuss the place where you’re going to be getting ready. Sometimes the venue where you’ll be getting ready before the ceremony is a few hour trip away from the city you live in and that could create a confusion for you and the artist so please do discuss where you’ll be getting ready before the trial to avoid any misunderstandings and high traveling fees.

3.   Get Prepared

It’s very important that when you meet your stylist for the trial you already know the look that you’re going for so feel free to bring a couple inspirational pictures. Pinterest.com or Instagram would be a good place to start looking for inspiration. When looking for inspiration please consider looking at models/celebrities that are in your color range meaning their hair color is close to yours or their eye color is the same as yours. No matter how much you like that boho-beachy wave on blond hair if you’re a brunette it just wouldn’t look the same. It will definitely speed up the process and will make it so much easier for the artist to create your dream look.

4.   Share Allergy Information

That would probably be the first question asked by the artist before your trial but still if you’re allergic to anything share this information with your stylist beforehand. You’d be surprised how many makeup products use nut oils and pearl products so even if you have a minor food allergy it’s worth mentioning.

If you’re severely allergic to any specific makeup brands or products at all and would prefer for the artist to use your makeup, please discuss it beforehand as well.

Most of the artists I’m working with are completely open to accommodate a request like that because safety always comes first and if you know that your favorite shade of lipstick is and it would make you feel the most confident it’s definitely worth mentioning.

5.   Come With A Clean Face

Wherever it is that you’re having a trial choose to come with a clean face, this will save time from removing makeup that you could use to determine your look. A good advice in general is not to use any harsh treatments prior to the trial, this will ensure that your skin isn’t irritated or too sensitive and you won’t have any unusual reactions to the application. Your hair should be washed same day as the trial preferably with very little to no product in it.

6.   Wear The Color Palette Close To Your Dress

Chances are that you’ll be wearing white or ivory shades at your wedding yet even if you’re going for red or black it would be extremely helpful for you to see your makeup with the colors that you’ll be wearing because they would influence the intensity of colors that you want to use in your makeup or the shape of your hairstyle.

If you still haven’t chosen the perfect dress a white t-shirt or button up would be a safe choice to go for.

7. Choose An Early Trial

When it’s possible I try to schedule trials with my clients for mornings of afternoons on a day when they have time to wear the makeup and feel the hairstyle for as long as possible. You will see how the makeup wears throughout the day and make sure that everything would stay picture perfect even in the evening.

8.   Schedule The Trial For A Special Event

I also recommend to have your trial arranged on one of the days that coincides with another event where you might go out, like somebody’s birthday party, your engagement party, a bachelorette, bridal shower, this will give you an opportunity to get some feedback on your look from your close friends if you want it and also if you know that your cheeks get way too rosy from a drink or two that might be a good way to see how the foundation coverage works for you or if you want to go easier on the blush.

9.   Give Honest Feedback To Your Stylist

This is one of the most crucial points an I cannot stress how important it is to be 100% honest with your stylist. Do you think that eyeshadow needs to be a couple shades lighter or maybe your curls are a bit too tight – do tell, communication is the most important on the way to your dream look!

I also like to circle back with my clients and ask the details of how their makeup wore or if the hairstyle wore the way they expected throughout the day. Your complete and honest feedback would help me make sure that any necessary tweaks could be done so that your look is an absolute perfection from the first photo of you getting ready taken to the last dance of the night.

10. Ask Questions

If there’s anything concerning your makeup and hairstyle, please ask as many questions to make you feel confident. Do you want to know how to maintain the look throughout the day if your stylists aren’t staying for touch ups – here’s a good time to get that information. Should you bring anything to refresh your look? It’s always a good idea to have a small touch up bag ready and have one of your bridesmaids in charge of it, most of the makeup artists would recommend buying a lip color and having a translucent powder or blotting papers on you in case you’re feeling a bit shiny, a travel-size hairspray or texture spray would also be a smart choice.

By the end of the trial you want to feel beautiful, confident and ready to go down that isle!
